Hello all, my first post, so please be gentle...

I have a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 4x2 6 cylinder Ext Cab WT(work Truck) I got it brand new from teh dealer during the GM trouble time, i paid $19,500 Cnd dollars... so i think it was a good deal as they normally go for over $26k

I choose this truck as i did not want the headache of a 4x4, and i would rarely use it, even though i live in Montreal, Quebec... However i bought it specifically for my ATV as it fits perfectly in the back bed.

I was getting my oil changed an tires rotated at my local Canadian Tire store, but now after having this truck for a bit over 2 years, i figure its time i start to get to know it more personally...

I am not sure what oil they used at my local Canadian tire when they changed it, or what brand of oil or filter, but i want to start to do it for myself...

So i am looking for advice on which brand of oil and filter to use?? i currently have 17,000 kilometers on the odometer and i do not drive on average more than 12 kms a day, to and from work and to the local grocery store. I do take a 4 to 5 trips a year for fishing up north through dusty roads hauling a small boat and my ATV, but thats it...

So, will it be Regular oil, or synthetic? 10w30 or 5w30 or 5w40??

I await your recommendations eagerly..

I cant tell you what the tire place put in but most likely just a generic oil. I would use castrol (dino or synthetic), or mobil 1 (synthetic). those are just the ones that are my personal preference and I currently use synthetic in my truck with 6,000 Mile (sorry dont know the km equivelent) change intervals, but had no problem using castrol gtx (regular oil) with 3,000 mile intervals (castrol gtx is my preferred regular oil brand). under your hood or in the manual should tell you type but most likely its gonna be 5w-30 as that has been the recommended for years. there is a thread on here listing all the brands etc that members use on their vehicles. I will see if I can find it and post the link. Filter I use Wix or NAPA (made by wix). If I use fram I use their higher end filter (not their cheap one) I think its the tough gaurd.

Anybody here use AMSOIL? Heard nothing but good things. I might use it for my first oil change.

I have only heard good things. never used it. Look up 1st Synthetics on the forum, he is an Amsoil vendor so he can tell you all you want to know about AMSOIL

I use and do mean USE Mobil-1 5w-30 in my 2007 5.3 liter engine. I use 2 to 3 quarts between changes, and have since new. At least my truck has a light that comes on when it needs oil. Hope that light never burns out, I don't want to burn up my engine.
