Your truck will take about any GM engine/trans combo you wanna throw at it. I assume you're wanting to do a swap from a 5.7 Vortec to the later 5.3 Vortec, right? While it is possible to do the swap, I have to ask the question, why? I mean, I understand that the 5.3 is an LSx based engine, and they can make good power, I would think that if you're going to go to the trouble of a major engine swap (it will be) you would go for something along the lines of an LS1 from a junkyard z/28 or Trans Am. You will need the donor vehicle's wire harness and ecu to make it work, especially if you're intending to run the engine in it's more or less stock configuration. You need to consider emissions requirements, too. If you live in a place that requires emissions inspections, you have to have equipment in place that either the engine or the vehicle it is in (whichever is later) came with from the factory, or you could fail the visual inspection before you put the truck on the rollers at all. We need more details, what is it that you're hoping to accomplish? Do you have a donor vehicle lined up? What specific engine/trans combo are you thinking of doing? There are several possibilities as far as engines go, even transmissions. You wanna stick with an auto, or do you wanna be bold and different and have a manual 'burban? If you wanna go manual, do you want 5 gears, or 6?

More info on this swap is a must.
Save yourself a lot of time, trouble, and money. Go with a 5.7 (350 cubic inch) engine and transmission combination.
