i have this problem and have replaced fuel pump fuel filter coil and distributor cap and routor button i am at a complete loss as there are no codes coming up on the scan tool it will start and run for a couple seconds than die but runs like brand new for that short time and leaving the key on after it quits and waiting for a second it will start and quit again when trying to restart it this is the weirdest thing i have ever seen 65 psi fuel pressure at the rail

do you have a security light on the top right corner of your dash when this is happening? does the security light come on during the light bulb check with the key in the on spot before you start it?

this absolutely sounds like a VATS security issue and your 98 has a security system.

it will need to he bypassed. I have no experience doing that.

are you using an original key or a cut key? try an original if you can.

well the light does come on for bulb check and when it quits the light flashes 4 times and goes out

that's a security issue! 100% try the relearn process in your owners manual. I am not familiar with it at all. if the relearn process doesn't work is when it needs to be bypassed.

theres an entire webpage dedicated to gm security systems.... I'll dig it up....

thanks that would be very helpful not sure if the key is an original or not as its just an old truck with only 1 key but the key does say gm on it

dude before you go reading the manual..... heres a quick video I found to reset it. this is probably a mechanic secret hidden in the service manual.

disconnect the positive cable and then momentarily touch the positive on the battery 3 times, pause for 1 moment and then reconnect the battery. this will apparently reset the security system.

i have tried every single thing i can find online to reset it but for some reason can not get it to bring the light on solid or flash continuously to relearn the key as it only flashes for a couple seconds after the engine dies really weird and cant find much on that kind of a problem

That sucks man! well, I'm sure this is the reason why the security system gets bypassed, it also gets bypassed for aftermarket car alarms. it is bypassed in my sierra due to aftermarket alarm but that alarm was removed. that truck came this way and I have not done the bypass.
