hey y'all! Just bought this truck and i plan on doing heavy hauling with it, need some input from ppl with similar trucks.

Its a 1991 chevy silverado 3500 ext. cab 7.4l gas with allison trans.
I got it cheap because it wouldn't go into reverse, took it to the trans shop. Basically the previous owner just rigged trany so it would drive (transmission wiring harness from a different car slapped on, changed burnt oil etc.).

ANYYYYWAYYY
I've had the transmission rebuilt heavier dutier for hauling lol.
I need to know what this truck EFFECTIVELY pull.
I know, I know its says on the chevy site 10,000 lbs. That's a bunch of cow manure, 3/4 ton trucks haul that easy.

I think the better question is, what do you want it to pull? :D

The big block/Allison combo is tried and true. Put a big cooler on that tranny and swap to electric fans. Then upgrade your brakes. Lots of GO needs lots of WHOA!

Check the leaf springs and upgrade the receiver hitch if you want? But you should be fine to tow 10K right meow as long as you can stop 10K!

The answer is I want it to pull everything up to 15k.

Also i have the tranny cooler but electric fans? What is that and what do i gain from it?

I'm thinking of dropping a new engine in because i have a major oil leak coming from the timing case cover. Apparently some brilliant idiot decided smearing RTV sealant all over the place would fix that.o_O
To add to that i have a leak in the exhaust manifold gasket (?)
after talking to a few guys i was told that taking the manifolds off may lead to big problems such as bolts braking and not being able to drill and rethread leading to new cylinder heads being needed.

My first test of mpg was on the highway @65-75 mph..... drum roll please......... 7.5 mpg:eek:

Is it there anything
(no seriously i'll rip the seats/radio/carpet out and sit on a milk crate instead lol)
Is there anything i can do for better gas milage? Besides just staying at 55mph.....?

Electric fans man. Fans that run off your battery instead of mechanically driven all the time by your motor. Reduces the load on your motor, they cool better at low speeds or idle, and they don't run all the time.

Gas mileage improvement on a 454 dually? Don't turn the key on.
