Hi,

I have a 2003 2500 X-cab 4x4 LS non HD. Currently, my instrument cluster randomly works. If I knock on the cluster or pop the dash, it normally starts up. I have removed the cluster and when loose it works every time. Reinstalled, it may or may not. I get the feeling it maybe a loose wire, but am open to any thoughts. All the gauges work fine. Truck was bought new and has 142K. The only alteration was the addition of an aftermarket radio several years before the issue started.

Thanks,

Honestly id just replace it. However, I believe it's usually an issue with bad solder joints. This means you can remove the cluster and reflow the solder joints on the back side. Just gotta touch each joint with a soldering iron until they begin to melt.

I'm pretty sure, based on reading the forums, this is the most common issue.
Iv seen it a few times myself but have always just replaced the unit, on the customers dime:)

I'm sure if it was my cluster acting up though, I'd attempt a repair first.

I would prefer to try and fix it myself but that’s just my preference. In most cases, a little re-soldering some broken joints or replacing some LEDs or stepper motor, I love it, but only when it’s as easy as that. I’m on this forum myself looking for some help because I cannot figure out this twitchy stepper motor on the fuel gauge for the 03. Silv. does anybody know where I can find an electronic I called component diagram of the cluster board? I need to trace back from the fuel gauge stepper motor and see what might be damaged along the way.

2003 was a bad year on the dash clusters . the stepper motors were all defective. the connector at the cluster if F'ED with will caused your problem .. so if a person was a little too heavy handed on the wiring it could have messed up those very soft solder joints. if you are good at soldering just give the solder joints a slight touch to fix the loose connection use magnifying glass to inspect .

there are internet dash repair and customization services .. one in Connecticut has good rep..

Hi, there’s something you said is interested me cause I’m having that issue with a twitchy gauge cluster I replaced a stepper motor and it’s still doing the exact same thing and I know it’s not the sending unit. I wanted to follow the leads back to wherever they go. See if there’s something broken along the way. Is there some kind of electronic diagram or schematic of the components on the board you mentioned the connector at the clusters and I’m not sure what that word is supposed to be. Would you clarify please? Thank you.
