i have a 1997 1500 suburban... ive called around to different tire shops, and everyon is telling me that 285/75/16's are too large, and that i will have clearance issues...but i have a buddy who has a 95 ck1500 tahoe and hes rollin around just fine on his..... now im wondering are the wheelbases different from a tahoe to suburban, OR will it actually work, or should i just bump up to a 265/75/16.....my burban come from the factory actually running 245/75/16's....any input would be great!!! thanks

I have 265/75/16 and just fine, but I have been told by many on here that 285/75/16 will fit without issues, which I will be going to when I get new tires in the fall, mine came with the 245s as well so when I get the 285s i will get a programmer to help adjust the computer for the bigger tires. 285s are 32.7 and 245 are about 30.5"

Most people seem to fit 285/75/16's just fine. I have seen a few reports of people needing to do a little fender trimming to keep the 285's from rubbing. I expect the tire shops are erring on the side of caution by saying that you may have clearance issues ("a few per cent of people will have clearance issues, and we don't want to deal with that few per cent when they complain to us").

285 75 might rub a little bit at full steering lock. I think that 285 70 16 will fit fine. My friend's dad ran those tires on a 1500 without a problem. :great:

I have 285/75/16's on my Suburban and before I put the lift on, they did not rub at all. This picture is before the lift and you can see it is close, but does not touch.

They wont touch unless you have bad shocks, learned that from a buddy of mine same tires, bad shockes. There's a lot of variables to think about when putting on different tires. Great looking tires though.

I have a 97 Gmc suburban 1500-4x4.... I have 265/75-16's on there now and want to get some mud or aggressive tread tires for hunting and winter.
So the 285/75-16's will not rub correct? I need a E rated mud tire. Who makes one?

285's will fit as long as stock ride heighth is still there, and all 4 shocks are either new or good condition. The width 75's 0r 70's, smaller number the fatter the width. Again stock lift and good shocks and they wont rub. Will not work with lowered trucks!!

The difference in the 70, 75, and 80 is the height of the tire overall, the higher the number, the higher the sidewall, not the width. The width of the tire is the first sequence,, 245,265,285, the higher the number, the wider the tire.

I just seen this looking for an answer to the same question, wanting to put 265/75/16 on my 1999 GMC Suburban for hunting season when the snow get deep. Looks like they will replace the 245/75/16 that came on it,, I get a gain in height and width. Only draw back will be that my burban has 3.42 gears and this will make them seem higher yet,, with them long leg's she will just tool down the interstate at a high idle,,,

I don't tow more than a 21' aluminum Center Console fishing boat, and here in the great black swamp of ohio hills are of no concern. So I think it is a win win for my truck??? let me know if I am missing something,,,

@CaptBob I run the same tires in BFG All Terrain on my truck with absolutly no problems whatsoever. some people complain about these tires, I dont even though I've buried my truck 3 times, that wasnt the tires fault or the trucks, it was mine. I run my tire pressure at 35 psi until winter then drop it down to 28 psi. when I got stuck last time I dropped it all the way down to 15 psi which really helped me get the traction to get out of that muck. I believe the people that complain about the traction of these tires have it pumped up to the maximum rated 65 psi for max weight pulling. I've never had them anywhere near that and for the most part I only pull a 12' aluminum boat. I do have a dump trailer and if I hook it up and the tires squat I do pump them up until they look good and then do the same for the front. these tires are Baja champions though and there has to be a reason for that!

I do have 3.73 gears, there is a tire chart floating around here that corresponds, tire size and gear ratios with maximum fuel efficiency being the goal. I will see if I can find it for you.

EDIT...

heres the tires chart, a 265 16" tire is 31.65" tall. being in the yellow you will have very good fuel mileage but somewhat poor performance.

here's a website that shows the tire height in inches and the difference of speed. the difference is 3.9% so when the speedo says 50mph your actually going 51.94mpg. I dont think thats enough to worry about catching the eyes of the law.
