Black sludge in my clutch master cylinder...WTF

Hey there. I've encountered a reoccuring problem again today. I was driving in my 97 Chevy W/T 4.3 V6 4x4 with a 5 speed and just out of the blue, the clutch pedal mashed the floor. I was about 1/2 hr away from civilization and realized that if I didn't get her moving, that I would be stranded...I managed to get her through the gears and made it to where I could check things out. There was no chance of downshifting, and when I wanted to stop, I had to shut her off. I figured something was wrong with the fluid level again so I opened the lid on the clutch reseivoir and discovered a thick black greasy looking fluid. I knew it shouldn't look like that but I topped it up with some Dot 3 and away she went. My question is why does it suddenly loose all clutch pressure without any warning...It seems to happen when it gets cold out....Thanx

possibly a leak?

I agree. If you have to top it off the there is probably a leak. The mashing to the floor symptom would be because it is drawing air back in through the leak and then you get air pockets. The black sludge could be dust being drawn in through the leak. Then the air pocket gets large enough that it becomes an issue.

Quite right, should not need to top off unless there is a leak, which there quite frankly is, take off the inspection cover to see if fluid is in the housing. Black is from dirt and to floor is old/new fluid mixing an not holding pressure. Had this problem long? Did any replacement lately with the Trans/Clutch system?
Is the whole reservoir black in color?

it's more than likely the seal on the cap for your clutch reservoir. it needs to be replaced because fluid is leaking out of it because it's warn. this happens to all manual vehicles over time. The black in the fluid is your degraded seal. remember these things are nothing more than hydraulics and there is a lot of pressure on the clutch system every time you press the pedal, the seal for that canister is a very thin rubber seal and over time as it ages it's going to degrade and leak and eventually if it's used that way forever it will degrade to the point that there is nothing at all there to seal the reservoir at all.
