Im sorry CKNSLS, there are companies that do claim that their programs do not leave footprints. One company that I know is wait4meperformance. Im just putting it out there so there's no reason to be hostile.

I have a Diablo Tuner. Does away with the 4 cyl mode, shift points can be adjusted, speedo calibrated, injector trims adjusted, 3 settings to choose from instead of being stuck with one tune. Reads codes thru the OBD port and can be removed easily with no trace of ever being on the truck. They run around $350. I have to take mine off before going to dealer sat for oil consumption issues. Oh yeah.......when you install it......Its married to your truck tho!

Around town use your manual mode in the 5th setting and it will never come on. No need to spend any money on aftermarket tunes that will indeed void your warranty.

Can you explain this process a little bit better? Turning off the AFM is a question that comes up frequently here and this is one option that may be appealing to those who do not want to purchase a programmer.

Quite simple actually. Just place the shift selector to M and before taking off push the up arrows on the gear selector 4 times until the dash readout reaches 5. Then just drive it like a 5 speed up to around 65-70. She'll never go into 4 cylinder mode and will upshift and downshift automatically through 5 gears. Unless of course you push the up button one more time into the 6 readout postion or run it in auto select.

Thanks for the additional info! It will be helpful when people search for AFM topics.

There are quite a few complaints on the V8to V-4 mode. But as stated it's as simple as using manual setting #5. I do this around town in mine. When mine comes on it is seamless and I have achieved 20mpg in 4 cylinder mode on the highway from So. Cal to Salt Lake City on three separate occasions. And once from So. Cal to Sedona, AZ same miles-per-gallon. I bought this truck because of this feature among other things.

the little bit ive driven my truck so far, V8 to V4 is almost seamless, at times it lags a touch, but for the most part its been fine.

Thanks for the additional insight! Lots of opinions on the AFM, that's for sure.

I have a 2014 Silverado Z71 5.3L. Have been waiting for the warranty to expire so I could start modifications. Warranty expired in January. I just installed a flowmaster 50 series big block muffler which sounds great in v8 mode but has a "shudder" type sound when in v 4 mode. I installed a Hypertech max energy 2.0 programmer and so far I couldn't be happier. The programmer has many functions which I haven't played with yet but the v4 disable was super simple. You just plug the programmer in under the dash and scroll through the functions. The whole procedure takes less than 15 minutes, disconnect programmer and you're ready to go. $319 from Autoanything, free overnight shipping and no tax to TN residents and a lifetime warranty. I've only had it 4 days, haven't seen any change in mpg yet but I hated the v4 mode so much I wouldn't care if the mpgs actually went down. "Shudder" sound is gone and throttle is more responsive because its always in v8 mode. They claim mpgs may even go up by 1-2 mpgs. I'll update as I learn more about it.

I can not stand my truck switching back and forth from V8 to V4 anymore. Is there any way the dealer can disable this stupid feature or am I going to have to buy a programmer to get rid of it? I need help because it really bothers me how much it switches back and forth.

Thanks everyone!

Dont bring it to yhe dealer, therevthe ones who put the stupid thing in.supetchips the way to go, go into advance settins and away it goes.you also get a code reader and most important, a code eraser, worth the money right out of the box. Enjoy.

I must be the most unobservant Silverado driver on Earth. I can't tell when my '10 is in V4!

Well y'all must be in really flat country with no wind gusts.

GSPKurt if you want to see when it's in V4 mode select instantaneous mpg on your DIC. It will reflect V8 or V4.

The problem with AFM is the engine is operating on 4 cyls at times which causes cylinder cool down and piston/ring problems. AFM is controlled by oil pressure and lifters and can lead to lifter problems also. It is best to deactivate AFM. MY 2009 5.3L started using 1 gallon oil every 2K miles, the lifter noise at 50K miles started once a week at start up. I purchased an AFM disable device from AutoAnything P/N-3843470 October 2014. My fuel mileage dropped 0.01 mpg. I have not heard the lifter noise in over a year and the oil consumption now is 1 qt every 3K miles. I paid $169 for the devise that plugs into the OBDII connector. When I take the truck for state inspection I remove the device. Works great and recommend it to all.
I drive only 10K miles a year, now has 84K miles after 8 years/4 months.

One of the reasons I just dumped my 2013 1500 and got a 2500 to avoid all this nonsense. I just didn't want to play games with disablers and other aftermarket stuff that may be a bandaid but not prevent other issues associated with AFM. And since GM likes to play with this sort of nonsense in their autos and SUV's, I will not be buying one of those ever again either. All it will take is them screwing up the 2500/3500 setup with some complicated nonsense in place of the reliable 6.0L Vortec to convince me to scratch GM off the list for anything in the future.

All I have ever done is keep the manual selector in 5th gear-that way the AFM doesn't come on. On trips from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles I let the AFM do it's thing. My 2011 Silverado-5.3 had 60,000 miles on it when I traded it in and used no oil.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but were you unaware that starting with the new body the 6.0 is also an afm engine?
