I do not have a remote for my 99. I noticed it has an RPO code fore keyless entry but also has (Domestic) at the end. Mine was assembled in Mexico. I ordered a remote and could not get it to program. Either I'm doing something wrong or there's something to this domestic/Mexico thing. Help please.

Since you have a RPO code, what is it??? Take a "clear picture" of your RPO code sheet. Let's see what you got.

Now to the 10 simple steps:

Programming for Pre-2007 GM Models

1. Get inside of your vehicle. It is necessary for you to be near both the inside locks and the ignition. Make sure you are sitting comfortably in your seat, and that the keyless remote is close enough to the steering wheel and locks.

2. Close all the vehicle doors. Make sure that each door is shut tightly, otherwise the vehicle will not sync correctly. If you can, give each door handle a yank from the inside to make sure that they are closed as tight as they can be.

3. Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder. However, do not turn ignition switch yet. This will screw up the cycle you will have to start over.

4. Press and hold the driver door unlock switch. This is the switch on the door, not the remote. Do not let up on the lock, otherwise it will mess up the process and force you to restart

5. While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, cycle the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON, OFF. Only turn the key as far as it will go before the ignition actually starts the engine. You do not want to start your car. Every time you turn the key to the ON position, a light on the dashboard should appear, and then go away when you turn the key to the OFF position. Do this step quickly.

6. Release the door unlock switch. The doors will lock and unlock one time to confirm the program mode is activated. If the door only locks, or only unlocks, you will have to start the process over again. Something likely went out of sync, or you did not turn the ignition ON/OFF fast enough.

7. Simultaneously press and hold the lock button and the unlock button on the keyless remote for fifteen seconds. The doors will lock and unlock as you are holding down both buttons to confirm the programming of that transmitter. Do not wait to do this step. You want to do this within ten to twenty seconds after you have shifted the ignition ON/OFF.

8. Repeat the previous step to program up to four transmitters. Once more, do not wait very long in between transmitters. Otherwise you will lose the sync with your car and have to start the process all over again.

9. Turn the ignition switch to the ON (one more click forward) position in order to exit the keyless entry transmitter mode. If you forget to do this step, it is likely that your car will not unlock/lock properly.

10. Operate the transmitter functions in order to verify correct system operation. Step out of your car, and go as far as 20 feet. Test the locking mechanism on the transmitter. If it works from that distance, step back another 20 feet (40 feet in total) and try it from there. If you are noticing it not working, you may have to restart the sync cycle over again. It may also indicate the battery is low.

I just tried again with the instructions you posted. Thank you by the way but I still can't get it to work. I hold the door unlock switch down and cycle the key three times but when I let go of the door button nothing happens. It's supposed to lock and unlock.

Make sure you have the correct part number on your keyless remote.
It will not program unless you have the correct remote.

What year model?

Is there a procedure in the owners manual?

My truck only came with with one remote, had 2 keys, only 1 remote. The salesman gave me one from an other used truck (just like my 2nd one had been taken for a previous sale)
Anyway, the programming procedure was in the manual

Brad,

Reading your RPO code sticker, you have the "keyless entry system", code (AU0) and electric door locks (AU3). You DO NOT have electric cargo / hatch locks (strange action) because I do not see the AU2 code.

Keep redoing steps 3 through 6 from the description above. If you need a breather follow the test below to separate the remote key fob problem from the vehicle learn problem. You might either have weak battery in the remote or an incompatible key FOB.

I'm giving a much easier test to follow, without the remote.

Get in the truck insert key into the ignition, hold down the unlock button on your door, while holding the button down, ...cycle the key from off to on (not start) two times.

Release unlock button and within a few seconds your truck will cycle the locks looking for the remote code. Tell us the outcome of this test.

That's my problem. I can't get it to cycle the locks like that. I hold the door unlock switch down while cycling the ignition then release the door switch. Nothing happens. Does not go into learn mode. I've tried two and three cycles cause I have read both. Frustrated. I also read somewhere to short out pin 4 and 8 on the data port to force it into learn mode. Has anyone tried this method? I'm afraid to short them out without knowingetting for sure if it's safe to do.

Is there a list of truly compatible remotes for these older K1500? I was toying with the idea of getting one for BBB (96 K1500 5.7l) since according to the window sticker it was so equipped, but then it also listed it was equipped with a 100 amp alternator, but noting the problems some folks are having I want to exercise caution in my purchase.

Your best bet would probably be a locksmith. If anybody would know of a FOB for your Burb it would be an automotive locksmith. And when you buy local there's no shipping hassles if it doesn't work.

Or you can bite the bullet and have a dealership supply the remote and programming is free.

Since selling the bike I could go that route but I'm saving up for the T18 rebuild for my CJ5, so I'm looking for a more affordable alternative. Last time at the local GMC dealer to get a couple of snap buttons on the cheap, I noticed for an oil change they wanted $180!?!

So, my problem is a can't get the vehicle to enter the learn mode. Has nothing to do with the remote. When I hold down the unlock button on the door and cycle the key nothing happens. I've read all kinds of things and watch plenty of videos but no combination of key cycles works. Oh, and I checked the fuse last night and it's fine. Has anyone had this problem and found the cause? Is there anything else I can check myself before taking it to the dealer?

My bet is the glove box is from a different vehicle and yours didn't have a key fob from the beginning. I needed to get new fobs for mine and found it was cheaper to buy an aftermarket security system that comes with 2 fobs and adds remote start. I love a warm vehicle on a cold morning! I even learned how to bypass the factory security system to avoid needing a Sentry bypass module. All the added benefits of this security system far outweigh the factory system and fob. I'm into it less than $100!
