I've got a 2001 silverado 2500. I can shift from park to Rerverse, neutral or drive, but can't get it to go back into park.
I adjusted the cable about a month ago, but its doing it again.

Cable seems fine. I suppose its in the steering column.

Any suggestions?

Can you push the lever on the tranny into park? The shifter cable sheath broke in my burb under the carpet on the drivers side before it goes through the floor. It had been detorating for some time and the sheath kinda fell apart so that the cable had like 3 inches of play. What a pain in the ass, I was trying to adjust the cable on the tranny a bunch of times and it wasnt working. So I started tracing the cable from the shifter inside the column. One thing I found was the shifter itself was very loose, there is a bolt inside the column that needs to be tightened to hold it on, if the bolt is loose there is quite a bit of play before the cable moves. Wasnt my problem though, eventually I found the break under the carpet.

Good luck

the cable is a common failure over these old trucks. the other problem with this is the transmission pan drop the monkey wrench idiots bend the shift bracket .. then the other issue .
I had to replace the pin on the bracket because the pin ball rusted and the cable fell off .

My cable sheath broke down by the transmission shortly after I bought my truck. Found out I had a problem when I walked into the gas station and someone yelled, "Your truck!!!" Luckily, didn't hit anything, but I did find out how hard it is to unlock a truck door while it's accelerating away from you (downhill).

I found the issue was down at the bracket right before the cable connects to the shift lever on the transmission. The cable could travel farther than it was supposed because the clip making it a wider diameter than the hole it was passing through disintegrated. A few steel zipties later and it's been there since 2011 with no problems. 😁 I'll see if I can get some pics.

My 2004 GMC Savana had a similar issue. With 215,000 miles, the transmission is still strong, but after a long road trip, I got home and tried to park it and it would shift into any other position except park. After watching a few videos, I opened up the rubber gasket housing surrounding the shifting column and found that the tiny spring against which the column is pressed to engage the Park position was not aligned; in fact, it was pointing out as if it was about to pop out. This was a suspicion because the rubber housing was cracked near the shifting column. I pushed the small spring back into place and voila! It smoothly went back into park. I've had to leave the rubber gasket off because this kept happening.
