I purchased my 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, four door, crew cab, LT, Z71 package from Mirak Chevrolet (Mirak) in Arlington, Massachusetts in July, 2012. This is the third Silverado that I have personally owned and one of numerous vehicles that my family has purchased from Mirak Chevrolet over the years. My Silverado is one of three General Motors Vehicles that I currently own or use for work, which includes a 1975 Buick Lesabre Custom and a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox that is my work vehicle. I take excellent care of my vehicles. My 2012 Silverado looks brand new, and it has approximately 15,000 miles on it.

Early this year I began to notice rust developing on the frame and that the coating on the frame was peeling off. Upon researching what was going on with my vehicle, I was able to determine that this seems to be a common issue among not only the 2012 Silverado, but also subsequent year Chevrolet Silverado’s and GMC’s. I called Mirak Chevrolet and Mirak agreed that this was an issue, and agreed to look at the issue that I was having with my vehicle.

Mirak looked at the car on March 17, 2016 and subsequently advised me he placed the vehicle on a lift and observed that the frame was in fact rusted and that it was more extensive than he originally thought. Mirak MADE AN AGREEMENT to fix the frame under the warranty and according to the technical service bulletin. Mirak advised me, by email, that he wanted to set a tentative to “have the frame finish repaired as necessary. “

I made numerous calls to the dealership and the response each time was that the dealership did not have the materials to complete the repair. Mirak called me on June 29, 2016, 3 months later, and advised me that the materials had arrived and that he could take my vehicle for the repairs. I made an appointment with Mirak and the vehicle was dropped off the week of July 4, 2016. I was advised that the repairs would take a week to a week and a half and was provided with a loaner vehicle.

I received the first of two telephone calls on Friday August 12, 2016 from Mirak. Mirak advised that the repairs could not be done because “there were too many rusted parts,”the rust on the frame was extensive, and that Chevrolet would not authorize the repairs.

Mirak asked if I parked my car on grass and I advised him no and that it was parked in a driveway. Mirak suggested that parking on grass could accelerate the rusting issue. Mirak also stated that the vehicle could have been driven in salt water. Mirak then suggested that because the vehicle had low miles it could accelerate the rust because it was not receiving enough air flow.

Mirak advised me that they had spoken to Chevrolet and that they would be willing to offer me $3000.00 towards the price of a new vehicle. I placed a complaint with GM customer service and they eventually replied that the rust was caused by excessive moisture and would therefore not be fixed according to the Technical Service Bulletin. GM customer service also advised me that it was not their issue because the dealership is an independent contractor .

I received an estimate of repairs from Mirak Chevrolet. The estimate to complete the repairs was stated as $2,886.75. I am a lifelong GM customer and current owner of two GM vehicles. I purchased my Silverado believing that GM would stand by their products like they have in the past for me. Right now, I have a 2012 Silverado that is seriously deteriorating due to the coating coming off the frame. GM offered me a $3000.00 customer rebate towards a new vehicle, which I find completely unacceptable. The cost to repair is less than what was offered towards the purchase a new vehicle.

My advice is to check those frames. I am now in the habit of looking at every silverado/ gmc frame, and I dont know of one that is not exhibiting some sort of issue with the wax coating coming off. Dont worry though, GM or the dealership will blame you for driving your car in the ocean or parking it under a waterfall.

Has your frames integrity been compromised? Is it just surface rust? Here in NY this is our constant battle... Putting rust preventative on yearly can significantly reduce its progression.

Nothing made out of metal is rust proof. Some things have a better coating than other, and can survive for longer without being affected, but sooner or later (depending on climate) rust will start to appear

Coat it with rust preventatives like TimTom64b suggested, and make sure to wash it frequently during the winter times

Where are the critical rust locations you have? Do you live near the ocean? Salt air? But it should not rust that fast. Please post some pictures if you can.

Parking in a drive way is better than in the garage when salt is on the road. When the garage door is closed in the winter months and the car is full of salted slush, the hot engine keeps the garage warm and the salt has more time to do its thing. On a driveway the slush will usually freeze unless it above freezing. Your driveway location, is it under a tree, the north side of the home, etc?

From the owners manual for 2012:
Use plain water to flush dirt and debris from the vehicle's underbody. Your dealer or an underbody car washing system can do this. If not removed, rust and corrosion can develop.

If any areas is of safety concern you should report it to the NHTSA (https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/). I had a 1984 K car that had a safety recall for all vehicle registered in snow belt locations. About 75 lbs of steel was added to the front end. It did not replace the rust, only should a part break due to corrosion it would keep it together but then the vehicle would be trash anyway. A complete joke of a fix.

welcome new fellow Massachusetts forum member.
This is the reason now 49 yrs being a GM owner I dumped GM. just purchased a Toyota. always had GM all those years I also still have 3 GM vehicles 84camaro/96 impala and the 2000 silverado.. now guess which vehicle had frame rust damage , due to that BS wax coating ???
YA the truck . the cross member holding the rear of the tank had a 18 inch long rust hole 1.5 inches wide. guess how I found it ??? I did my fall inspection and I saw that the wax coating had a weird look as I pecked it off then the hole.

lucky for me $400 to replace that cross member patriot of tewksbury did the work about 4 yrs now still good.

the reason my frame is not rusted except for that cross member pipe is I have been scraping off that wax and appling this rustfre 1013 product fiber reinforced black petroleum coating . brush on..16yrs plus and no rusted wheel wells ,no rusted wheel well surfaces its all black and solid. the frame is tough to do unless you remove the bed or lift it which I did.

stay away from any GM vehicle use the internet forums read about the vehicles your interested in and use the posted reports of how the dealerships handle this type stuff. GM is a very bad company its all china crap this is not a made in america vehicle any more.

I liked that comment the dealership blames GM !!! then GM will blame the dealership...
EVERYONE IN MASS DRIVES IN THE OCEAN !!! LOL...

NO WAX ON TOYOTA ITS ALL PAINTED BLACK .

Welcome to being a GM owner :)

It's fun right? Makes you wanna go purchase another. I just fixed my transmission dipstick tube that WAS SNAPPED IN HALF. The dealership told me the recall had been done..guess what..it hadn't.

My 11 LTZ has frame rust too...personally that doesn't bother me so much. These thing are going to happen. What DOES bother me is I have paint FLAKING OFF on my rocker panels so now I have to address that before winter or watch it turn into a rust bucket.

I am also gonna paint the frame. The way I see it..I probably won't purchase another GM vehicle after this. I bought one with the warranty to have a peace of mind and so far with every single issue they have dodged helping me. It just sucks man. I love my truck but the customer service makes me hate it too.

@j cat hit the nail on the head there. I wouldn't be surprised if all manufacturers used the same frame coating. Difference is in the handling of issues. I dealt with crap for a couple months and nothing got done until I posted a bad review of the dealership on their facebook page explaining my problems with them just trying to avoid me. Co worker has a tacoma and Toyota insisted he bring his in for the same issue even tho his wasn't having problems they still took his truck gave him a brand new truck to drive while repairs were being done and pulled his truck off its frame cleaned it and applied a new different coating.

A bed sure, a few lights. If all they removed was the bed, go for it. The poster implied the body came off, that's a big job, big risk, for (imo) a small return. Just my 2 cents.

Yep, I know that; but, do they remove the body to lift it, or just raise (jack) it a little to insert the lift?

Removing the body (to my brain) is total disconnect; that would include all wiring, the brakes, the AC, the steering, the cooling system, etc.

If he's talking about the bed, I have no problem with that; if he's only raising the body, I'd go for that.............but, I'm not interested in having the body removed to clean some rust. as I said before, just my opinion.

Not much different than removing a bed to do a fuel filter
some toyota trucks did have frame rust problems that is old stuff . the new trucks now have a very good black paint not wax on the steel. the wax comes off easy on GM frames then it creeps under and rusts.

not surprised your friend with the toyota truck had it repaired at dealership . If you go past the toyota dealerships they do have new frames out behind the repair shop this is because of these truck frames that had this issue on the older models.

I happened to notice these GM frame rust problems on other forums so with the new GM trucks this is now common. poster stated the inspection station in maine failed him too much rust 3 yrs old 80K miles.

To my knowledge the main reason the 2012 Silverado has frame rust relates tot he fact GM knowingly used material from Mexico knowing the coating was sub standard. But continued to use the material due to cost savings. I presently own a 2012 Silverado and had to have the frame welded 3 times in order to pass inspection. I am trying to get a law suit started. I will keep you informed. PS GM never informed the buyer of the problem at time of purchase.
