Overhead Console Problem

Hello,

I have a 2018 Silverado 1500 and the overhead console where the map lights and sunglasses holder is located is starting to come off.

It also sounds like a screw or clip has fallen inside the console and every time I make a turn in the truck this little screw rolls around making an annoying sound.

I'm sure this is an easy fix but I'm far enough away from a dealer I would rather just fix it myself instead of taking it in for a simple warranty coverage service.

How is this overhead console secured? I assume there are a couple of clips holding it up and maybe a screw (the one I suspect has fallen out and is rolling around). I've included a picture to show where it has started falling away from the roof.

Thanks,

Nick

The main issue is that the screw has fallen out and landed inside the console area.

I finally found a video that shows exactly what I was looking for. I just needed to pop off the cover shown in the video and then I was able to located the screw that came out and put it back where is belongs.

You post helped me a lot, had the same issue on my silverado 2018, both of the screws fall, i just installed where they belong. Very easy to fix if you know the main issue, i was thinking of using glue or something at the beginning.

Yep, 1 screw is all that holds it snug!

Did you ever suss out how to remove this dang console. My 2019 3500 HD look exactly like yours, no T10 screw, I believe these are now riveted. The black plastic right next to them looks like a tab that needs to be released but I have yet to accomplish this.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

GM must have done a lousy job securing the retaining screws in the overhead console. I have also been experiencing the same issue for about a year (loose screw that sounds like a marble rolling around). I took it back to my dealer because the back end of the overhead console was coming loose. I mentioned the rolling screw issue. They fixed the looseness but did not address the rolling screw issue. I heard the loose screw again after leaving the dealership.

I also appreciate these posts as I'm fixing the problem myself. I watched another U-Tube video on how to remove the overhead console, and it showed two T-10 screws being removed, but my model did not have such screws. I used a flashlight and finally observed one small black Phillips head screw up inside the overhead console. I discovered there was only one screw securing the console and I found the other screw, as all of you have discovered, loose inside the plastic console housing. The only problem I encountered was struggling to loosen the entire console but eventually, I succeeded.

What I did find as the reason one of the screws probably came loose was that the area above the screw hole was hitting against the metal housing. This odd situation prevented the screw from fully inserting itself. The other screw hole location did not have this problem. This was obviously a manufacturing error and a product of poor quality control.

This is somewhat hilarious! I have a 2018 Silverado. Absolute same problem! I thought for the longest time something was loose inside the dash! You sit on the passenger side and it sounded like it was up next to the windshield infront of the driver. Great thread! 2018 GMC Sierra and my screw fell out this morning on the way to work. Googled the problem and found this thread right away. Took me about 2 minutes to read the posts, 3 minutes to watch the start of the video, and 5 minutes to fix when I got home. Took the most time to get my tools and put them away. You guys rock!

For me, the right screw came loose and fell out after about 23,000 miles. I reinstalled that screw with loctite. The left screw was also loose but hadn't fell out yet. This was a bit harder to access due to the plastic panel and access hole. I just tightened that but didn't add loctite to avoid the risk of dropping/losing the screw.
