SRS issue HELP!!

Hello all!

I am pulling my hair out and was hoping you guys could help. I have a 2010 Silverado 1500 Z71, 5.3L, Flex. My SRS lightcame on and I narrowed it down to the driver door. If I start the truck and drive no issues arise - if I open the driver door with the ignition on, SRS lightactivates.

I read the code and got DTC B0085 symptom 00 which says Front Left Side Impact sensor. I have replaced the sensor and checked wiring back through the door and into the cab. With the new sensor light still comes on, same symptoms and cause, same codes.

I am starting to think its the SDM module but I would think I would see the light on all the time or see more codes. Maybe BCM reflash?

Any thoughts?

Ok, so opening the door is the clue.
A lot of times, changing the part is not the answer. With SRS codes, the secondary code tells you what to look for. However, I couldn't find anything for a code 00.
If your having a problem when the door is moved, I'd suspect a wiring problem. You could have a broken wire, a bare wire going to ground.
But, a wire causing a problem only when the door is open.
This makes me think there is a problem in the hinge area, when the wires enter the door.

Thats what my brother thought too - I did a quick inspection of the wiring and it is still within the protective plastic tube and protective felt tape. I do not see any chaffing - do you think something could have happened within the tape. Is there a way to test that without stripping the tape back?

I appreciate your help

follow the wiring back.. With the battery disconnected and the vehicle battery cables shorted together use an ohm meter to locate if the srs door wires are open . wires will be color coded so check at door then where the wires enter the vehicle . move door see if the ohmmeter reacts to the door movements.

if there is a defect with the wiring make a NHTSA report stating your findings.

Your going to need to open the door panel again and look at the way it's wired.
Note the colours of the wires, and then trace them. They may go to the door control module.
If they go straight to the hole in the door frame, look outside the door (in the wiring bundle) for those two colours. Look very carefully at the wires, feel them, stretch them (gently) see if you can tell if the copper moves inside the plastic.

Appreciate that - yes it is a straight run back into the kick panel - I will need to do all of the above plus trace it to a connector inside the truck

Hey guys,

So good news - I have isolated the problem. You guys were correct in the broken wire within the insulator. I haven't stripped out the harness yet to check it out but long story short - door open no connection door closed connection. I will report this to the NHTSB and report back once the new harness is in and tested OK. I appreciate your guys help - you saved me a lot of time.

your report back to us will be used by many others that see this type issue . like I said others have had wire failures with no insulation damage. this may cause a huge GM recall if there is much more wiring manufacturer defects.

since it is an air bag circuit I am sure NHTSA will be very interested .

good troubleshooting ...

Harness replaced and symptoms are gone. No SRS light so it was a broken wire WITHIN the insulator with no signs of damage.

For future reference if anyone needs it there is a new part number.

Front door harness (w/Power locks)- Literally every single cable in the door
2010 Silverado 1500 5.3L 4x4 Crew Cab
Part No: 22912643

Methinks you might have missed this.

NHTSA being a federal agency operates under this current administration at snail speed. It may take a few months until they send you some documents and perhaps they may ask for a picture and answer some questions .. I reported my 2000 silverado 1500 defective parking brakes it did take some time before they got back to me. eventually they had recall and some sued GM in class action lawsuit.
with all the defective issues on these new vehicles they must be quite busy..
like those Takata air bags. they are still installing the defective part in vehicles made now . all new vehicles with Takata inflators will be called back for replacements.

Good point - ill tuck it away for a few months just in case

the reason the air bag recall grows is because these devices when they age become very unstable. could blow just by the internal defect. in humid weather they are more unstable.

some manufacturers are paying for rental cars until these owners can get the repair done [part issue]
some say pull the fuse !

The recall 2 weeks ago (which included my vehicle), said just that. As the bags age the active ingredients, the chemicals that cause the explosive inflation, become less stable.
The recall also said, areas with high temps, wide temp changes and high humidity, were higher risk.
The recall also said parts are not in stock.
