Which brand of replacement alternator should I get for a 2000 GMC Sierra?

"Dusty" my 2000 GMC Sierra K1500 Pickup needs a new alternator, as the original one is making noise. He's got 135,000 miles on his 5.3L engine, so the alternator bearings and/or brushes are probably getting worn out at this point. The RPO Code sheet says he has the 105 amp K68 code alternator. I want to replace the alternator with an AC Delco (unless there's a better quality aftermarket brand that I should consider...). The AC Delco website catalog came up with two different alternators that may fit:

#321-2104, 105 AMP(K68), PROD GEN 10480388, DELCO SERIES AD230, 6S PULLEY ($293.77 on Amazon)

#334-2491A, Family DE-AD230, Unit MFR DE, Amps 105, Pulley 6S, Fan IF, Regulator IR, Clock 11:30, w/ Delco 105 amp alt., 334-2491A, 6Y1, 0050A (139.88 on Amazon)

Amazon.com has both of these alternators and says that they both fit my GMC Pickup. Unfortunately, one is about $300! The other one is $140. From photos I took of the alternator and comparing them to the $140 one's photos, they seem to match. But the number I tried to read off of the alternator case looks like it matches the almost $300 one (PROD GEN 10480388)!

Am just wondering what the difference in price would be. The AC Delco catalog says the #321-2104 is OEM and the other one (#334-2491A) is in the "Professional" line. I hope I don't end up having to buy the $300 one! OUCH!!!!:(:eek:

Or should I look into a NAPA or other aftermarket alternator instead? I've read that most GM vehicles are better off getting their electrical parts replaced with the AC Delco brand. But then I've read that the AC Delco brand's quality isn't what it used to be. So I don't know what I should do. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Most of the alternators are AC DELCO or Delphi anyway and they are rebuilds regardless what the name would be on the box. I would take the truck to your favorite auto parts store and have them look it up then they can look at the truck to be sure which one you need. Most likely it be the lower price one. The $300 model might be for where a heavy electrical load and durability would be needed.

Look at NAPA web site or AutoZone. When it comes to alternators, I always have replaced with with the vehicle OEM brand unless you're in a marine application or other special needs, such as towing, school bus chassis, etc.

When I thought my alternator was going out on my 2000 K2500(from what sounded like bearing noise), it turned out to be the belt tensioner pulley..... much less $ to replace than the alternator.
Not saying yours isn't, but.......it's at least worth checking out.

Scott beat me to it; as I'm reading, I'm thinking it could be a tensioner, or idler bearing. These will fail a lot more often than alt bearings.

Remove the belt and play with the different pulleys. A bad bearing will have a dry, gritty feel, while a good bearing will feel smooth.

Note, the alt pulley will have a bumpy feel, due to magnetism.

  1. my 2000 silverado had the GM defective voltage regulator . what happens with these is they get corroded up here in rust belt so the regulator starts failing. that was @80K miles. got a new NOT re-built alternator from AUTO ZONE ..lifetime warranty .. no problems now 80K plus miles on it.
On noise sure can be other items .. tension-er pulley bearing /idler bearing will do it.. I had the idler bearing make some noise put some grease in it.. still good ..
